The domestication of sheep for their wool first occurred around 10,000 BCE and since then wool has played a pivotal role in clothing production. There are several types of wool, each characterised by the breed of sheep from which it originates.  Wool is highly prized for its versatility and is used in the production of a wide array of yarns.
